Ifugao Hut Healing Project 2014 – 2015

 Ifugao Hut Healing Project

Ifugao Hut Healing ProjectWhat is the Ifugao Hut Healing Project?

We believe in the power of ritual to help us heal from historical trauma. We are a group Filipinos and Filipino North Americans who would like to build a Traditional Ifugao Hut that will symbolize our capacity for healing and reconciliation thru the sharing of Filipino Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices.

We are building the Traditional Ifugao Hut in Ohio led by mombaki (healer) Mamerto Tindongan. Our vision is to build an on-site installation and healing ritual at the site of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair in Missouri.

Background

Mamerto Tindongan: I watched a documentary of the 1904 World’s Fair, where some Philippine Cordillerans were brought to Missouri as zoo-like entertainers. In 1996, it struck me like lightning. I knew since then that something as dramatic as the fair itself had to be done to redeem the honor and pride of tribal people. But I didn’t know what it was. In 2011, I had a vision to establish a healing/retreat center in Ohio.

It was only when I came to the U.S. that I learned about the World’s Fair. I became aware since then that there were a number of descendants of the Fair’s participants who were investigating some facts about the event. I learned about the different stories and explanations about the impact of this historical event on the hearts, minds, and souls of so many Cordillerans in the U.S. I felt that there was still something missing which I later realized was the need for healing.

The Plan to build a Traditional Ifugao Hut

With help, I am going to finish this Ifugao hut with “traditional” or indigenous architectural design. It will be collapsible and will not use nails. We will set a date to reassemble it in Missouri and perform a healing ritual for those who experienced trauma during the 1904 World’s Fair.

We will create a sacred space and share activities where we can all come together and experience healing and reconciliation. We will let the world know that there are descendants of those participants to the World’s Fair who still adhere to the traditional ways of life.

After this event in St. Louis, the Hut will be brought back to Ohio as part of the larger vision of creating a traditional model village.
